This was the panel I hosted on 08/09/2020 at UPLINK, an all digital expo by Long Island Retro Gaming community. This year I’ve decided to show off some cool 3D games from the first decade of IBM PC. Lots and lots of technically impressive stuff there. Join me on this journey into the third dimension!

A quick video interview with a legendary game designer and co-founder of Sierra On-Line Roberta Williams. Taken from the “Episode 3” issue of Interactive Entertainment CD magazine from July of 1994. Original audio was really bad, so I’ve decided to fix it up a bit. The result is a tad distorted, but I think it’s much better than what was there originally.

Writer, podcaster, and game designer Mat Bradley-Tschirgi returns once again, this time to discuss the legendary PC platformer series from id Software and Apogee. Can we look at these games without rose colored glasses? Find out as we go through all of the adventures of Billy Blaze!
A selection of internal photos and videos, along with a doze of game footage and music, documenting the history of Westwood Studios taken from the Westwood 10th Anniversary (Virgin Interactive Entertainment, 1995) bonus CD.
Box blurb: “The history of Westwood Studios parallels the history of development in the computer entertainment industry. Westwood’s 10th anniversary sees them continuing to lead the way with Command & Conquer taking the games playing community by storm, worldwide. Westwood Studios have always stretched the boundaries in gameplay, animation, wit and style. Collected here for the first time are some highlights of Westwood Studios’ first 10 years. Enjoy.”
Source files were all Cinepak compressed AVIs in 320×200 and 15 fps. I have decided not to do much with that apart from a resolution bump and a 4:3 aspect change.

The other day I’ve made a guest appearance on Human Interact’s stream dedicated to Quake’s 24th anniversary. Alex and I played a few games of deathmatch and capture the flag, and were joined by other members of Human Interact’s Discord server in voice chat later on.

A Grammy nominated musician and a fellow PC nerd Dan Policar joins me to talk about the legendary Roland MT-32. We discuss its history, strengths, drawbacks, and give advice on purchasing your own vintage unit. Join us to find out if paying $700 in 1987 was worth it.
I was happy to be invited to be a guest on another Human Interact stream to guide Alexander through one of my favorite games of all time – the original 3D survival horror game “Alone in the Dark”.

This is the presentation I gave at Long Island Retro Gaming Expo on August 10th, 2019. I was provided with an audio recording which I combined with my slides. Join me as I dive into a little bit of history of French computer games and then show off some of my favorite examples of very French weirdness. Bon, alors, on commence?
I had a pleasure of joining the Hardcore Gaming 101 crew for their “Top 47,858 Games of All Time” podcast for an episode about a Coktel Vision game Gobliiins. Check it out!
In this video I confess that I know very little about hardware, and demonstrate that even someone like me can turn someone else’s trash into DOS and Windows gaming treasure with a help of a few easy to install upgrades. I specifically would like to point out the ease of installing a Compact Flash adapter in place of an IDE hard drive. It makes things so much faster and more convenient. I love it! And if I can do it, you most certainly can.
It’s been a pleasure to join the DOS Game Club podcast crew and talk about one of my favprote games of all time – Monolith’s 1997 Build engine masterpiece “Blood”.
Celebrating TEN years of DOS Nostalgia while drinking champagne, messing around with DOS games, and answering questions from the chat.
First I try the new re-implementation of the classic DOS FPS Blood – NBlood Then I try and repeatedly fail to get the game D.O.G.: Fight For Your Life running with sound. The next game is Tempest 2000 Then it’s Duke Caribbean: Life’s a Beach Then it’s Tetris Classic Then Commander Blood And then I get too drunk to play anything else.

Streaming a new game for a change! Well, a new game made with retro tech – the legendary Build engine. It’s Ion Maiden time! Afterwards I show off another upcoming retro-style FPS “Amid Evil,” and share my thoughts on current wave of classic fps revivals.

I finally got to be a guest on the DOS Game Club podcast, where I talked about one of my favorite DOS games of all time – Alone in the Dark.
Check it out:
Today I present to you an hour of classic FM synthesis music from IBM PC games. Recorded using OPL3LPT from Serdashop, which uses an authentic Yamaha YMF262 (aka OPL3) chip which was the same chip used in Creative’s Sound Blaster Pro 2, Sound Blaster 16, and AWE cards, as well as AdLib Gold. OPL3 was also compatible with OPL2, which was used in AdLib Music Synthesizer Card, as well as Creative’s early Sound Blaster models. Anyway, if you’re into DOS gaming, you’ll recognize its signature sound. Real CRT monitor in the dark was used to add to the mood. Enjoy.
Today I take a look at the X3MB Buran MIDI Module from Serdaco. It’s a very compact Sound Canvas 55 alternative with an impressive 50 megabyte instrument bank, and an interesting 3D printed case design. It sounded great no matter what obscure MIDI file or DOS game I threw at it. And of course now I can tell all my friends about the Soviet space shuttle when they see this unit on my shelf. Note that this is a MIDI only device, and it doesn’t play digital sound effects. Please forgive interference noise on some of the more quiet recordings – I’m obviously in need of better wiring, or maybe just some ground loop isolators.
